Film Poster Draft Eight

I decided to then change the colour of the background as it gave the poster a more sinister look and added the extra element of ambiguity amongst the killer. Also I decided to change the way that the name of the film was shown. I used the warp tool on Photoshop to make it seem like the name was either coming from the eye or going into it. It was effective in bringing the poster to life but looked unusual in the poster.

Poster Draft Seven

here I wanted to create a different version of my other drafts and decided to change the way that the name of the film was displayed on the poster. therefore I set the letters up in a way that was composed around the contour of the face. I like this effect however I think that it looks like it is not part of the poster and looks odd amongst the other elements of the poster.

Sixth Poster Draft

I decided to change the way the font of the appeared on the poster. I decided to make it look like it has been distorted connoting a sense of anger and fear of and in different characters and how the film will create a sense of foreboding.

Fifth Poster Draft

After looking at the layout of my other posters I decided to change the layout by making the title run into the empty space near the eyes. I decided to warp the title to make it look like it was larger towards the end. This was effective as it made the poster look cynical and like a slasher film. I then moved the tagline towards the bottom of the poster to make it easier to read, however I think that it needed to be a different colour to make it stand out more.

Fourth Poster Draft

This is a developmental draft from my third poster where I decided to edit the face and only make it look like half of the face could be seen. This created an added sense of ambiguity within the image.

Third Poster Draft

This is the third draft of my poster. I decided to change it portrait as this conformed to many different conventions of horror posters. The main image is original but I have altered it on Photoshop to give the character a mysterious feel and make him look like a character who is scarred. It is a close-up image where we see the character engaging with the audience. The film name is located under the image. It was in an eroded and slashed horror font in red which conformed to the horror genre. I then wrote the credits underneath using the steel tongs font and also included the release date with production company logos either side. The tagline was also situated on the top of the poster however I think it needs to be clearer and have less of a contrast with the black.

SCREEN GRABS OF THE PROCESS

Firstly, I used the magic wand tool to select parts of the image. after selecting the irrelevant parts I deleted the irrelevant parts and adjusted the contrast to create a heavy contrast and made the image black and white to contrast the white background. However it also included accents of red to show blood and scarring.

I then added the name of the film in a horror font that I had found from dafont.com and changed it to a red colour to show the importance of blood. I then added the tagline and credits underneath to follow basic conventions of a movie poster.

Finally, I added release dates and production company logos to the poster to make it look effective. I then changed the colour of the tagline to make it look more effective. Overall, the poster had simplistic colours to allow the main image to capture the audiences attention.

Second draft of poster

This is a development from my first draft where I decided to use the same photo in the same style but change the colour of the tagline and also change the font of the film name to make it look more like it had been written in blood. also I used the new steel tongs font which I had found and include features such as Dolby digital. Also, I included the production company logos as well as the release date to let the viewers know exactly what they were watching and when it would be released.

Film Poster Credits Experiment

I decided to research different templates for writing credits. I eventually found the steel tongs font which allowed me to input the names following key job roles in the film. This is an experiment of the different and possible credits I could use in my poster.it looked effective and very similar to credits seen on a poster therefore I will use this font template in my poster instead of normal fonts found on word.

Film Poster Draft

This is the first draft of my poster done on Photoshop. I used an original image that I took of the killer with a chain looking deadly. His facial expression is ambiguous which added to the cynical look. also the effect of making the background makes him stand out amongst the basement and also give him the spotlight, indicating his importance in this film. The tagline is situated on the top of the poster with the main film name in big letters and a scratched type font. I have also included the release date and credits. However there needs to be production company logos and the credits need to be in a more appropriate font. also the tagline needs to be in a more visible font colour.

Film Poster Sketch 2

This is a second sketch of my poster. I decided to use a different image and a slightly different layout. The image was a  close up of the killer in a mask which was at the side of  the poster. It is taken as a close up to show the lack of emotion and the facial expressions of the killer. it also engages the audience and makes them want to be a part of the film. The tagline is on top of the film name which then has the credits and release information underneath so the viewers know when it will be in cinemas.

Film Poster Sketch

This is the first sketch of my film poster. I decided to choose an image that looked rather ambiguous to make the horror genre known. I like the use of the posture and the way the actor is positioned because it makes him look dangerous and a character with a sense of foreboding. The film name is enigma and that will run across the top of my poster with the tagline underneath. The credits and other important information will go along the bottom of the poster which is conventional and seen on many of the posters that I have looked at.

Film Poster Flat Plan

I have created a film poster flat plan to convey my ideas of how I want my poster to look. I decided to create an unconventional landscape poster. I wanted the main image to be taken in the location of the film therefore having it landscape but give it a more realistic effect. The film name will run across the bottom of the poster with the production companies and credit information. The names of the actors/actresses in the film will go across the top of the poster.

Film Magazine Flat Plan

This is a flat plan for my film magazine. I have decided to use this layout as there are a majority of other magazines I have researched with similar layouts. The image will be  placed in the centre of the magazine following the rule of thirds and the headline will go across the image in large lettering. there will be various sell lines either side of the image. The sub images will go along the bottom of the magazine is a banner form. I will also put the masthead on the top and follow other conventions of a magazine such as the price and barcode.

Film Magazine Front Cover Draft 2

Screen grabs of the process

This is the second draft of my magazine front cover. I decided to use a simple red, orange/yellow and white colour scheme to represent the horror genre and give it clarity. The masthead is in a slashed red font to emphasise the impact of the horror genre. Also, I have included the issue number, date, price and barcode to follow the conventions of music magazines and show that it is a magazine that will be sold. The button is 3d looking to make it stand out on the page. I also added various sell lines to engage the audience and make them want to read more about the articles in the magazine. The headline is bold and shows the names of the film with a caption on what the feature article contains.
Along the bottom of the magazine is a range of sub images to show other features in the magazine to entice the audience and leave them eager to find out more.

Film Magazine Front Cover Draft

This is the first draft of my front cover which I have created using Photoshop. The masthead will be in a dripping style font to replicate the look of blood. The main image is of the model looking at the camera with a baseball bat to show the weapon that the killer uses. However I think that a knife may be a better weapon to use because it suggests a stronger emphasis on the slasher genre instead of the bat. The chiaroscuro effect of the lighting gives the killer a mysterious effect. He will also be placed on top of the mast head to show his dominance in the film. Along the bottom of the magazine there will be a series of images from different films to show other things that will be in the magazine. The headline will be large and show the name of the film to engage the audience. Other sell lines will be placed around the sides of the magazine to let readers know of other articles that will be featured in the magazine. There will be other conventions such as a barcode and price to show that this magazine is aimed at a mass market and will be sold in shops. The button engages the audience because it is bright and the '50' is bold to alert the readers that there is lots of interesting information to read in  the magazine that will engage them and eager to watch films and read reviews. The colour scheme will be simplistic to show clarity within the magazine and genre. I will use red, orange/yellow and white as these colours represent the genre well.

Film Magazine Front Cover Sketch 2

This is the second sketch of my magazine front cover. I decided to name my magazine 'SLASH' because I wanted to create a horror specific magazine. The tagline line/slogan will be engaging to the audience and make them want to read more. the killer will be looking at the camera conforming to conventions and will wear a hoodie. the name of the film will be used as the headline and will include a caption. the magazine will also feature an exclusive interview with Wes Craven. This will engage the audience and make them want to read the exclusive content of the magazine. The sub images will be of films that are new and really show the best of horror, they will be in the form of a banner. More film names will also be listed along the side of the magazine as sell lines with a button on the other side showing the 'Top 50 Must See Horror Movies'.

Film Magazine Front Cover Sketch 1

This is the first draft of my film magazine front cover. I wanted to make the main image on the front cover a midshot of the killer in my trailer. it will be centre framed and show the dark and mysterious character of him. he will wear a hood and half a mask to hide his identity. The headline will be large and go across the killers body. There will also be lots of sub images on the bottom of the magazine in the form of a banner. Also, there will be a button to include an interesting sell line which grabs the audiences attention. The sell lines will be displayed on the side of the magazine with various different articles to entice the audience. The magazine will also follow conventions such as having a barcode, issue number, price etc. to show that you can purchase it.

Front Cover of Horror Magazine Planning Ideas

Horror Magazine Planning Ideas
Masthead Title
The masthead will be bold and clearly displayed along the top of the magazine. It will relate to the horror genre as I would like the magazine to genre specific so the target market can find information about their favourite films related to the horror/slasher genre. The masthead colours will reflect the genre as it will be red indicating blood will the possibility of it being in a dripping or slashed effect like the magazine 'Scream' or 'Fangoria'. Possible masthead ideas could be 'Slash', 'Enigma'

Main Image and Sub Images
The main image will be a midshot of the killer in the centre of the magazine looking at the camera therefore looking at the audience to get them intrigued and make them want to find out more about the character in the film. the killer will be wearing a mask however just covering half of his face so you can see the other half. This conforms to stereotypes of the killer wearing a mask therefore the genre of the magazine is clear meaning people can find out more about the killer and can relate to the magazine. He will also be wearing a hoodie to hide his identity further creating a sense of foreboding.
The sub images will consist of images of directors, films that are being released and also the character being featured in my film. they will be placed along the bottom of the magazine in a banner type layout to grab the audiences attention.

 Headline and Sell lines
The headline will be associated with the film either displaying the name of the film or a tagline that is associated with the film to grab the audiences attention. It will be bold and easy to read so it is memorable and appropriate. It will feature a caption to give the audience further information and will not interfere with the facial aspects of the same image.
The sell lines will on the sides of the magazine so they are easy to read. Also they will give information on reviews of the latest films and latest directors. These will be engaging and attractive to make the audience want to read the magazine more.

Layout Design- Colours, Fonts, Banners etc.

The layout will be simple yet effective as the image will create a sense of foreboding and allow the audience/readers to get a sense of character. This will be the main focal point for the readers. The use of colours will be simplistic: white, red and possibly gold or yellow to conform to genre conventions and replicate the style of the Empire/ Scream magazine.
I will also include banners at the bottom of the magazine and at the top of the magazine to display images and sell lines. There will also be use of a button to show other sell lines in a different layout. The headline font will be will be simple yet have a slashed effect or blood effect and be bold whereas the sell lines and other information will be in simplistic font that is easy to read.

The Pitch

Chosen Genre – Horror/Slasher
Outline of ideas
Tagline – Can Sins Be Forgiven?

Basic Plot Synopsis
Name of Killer – Jonathan
He is a boy with no father (Passed away)
The killers mum has left her son and husband, she left when Jonathan was a young boy . His mother went off with another man who was financially stable and had his own business, his mother became a very successful business women.
After the departure of his mum Jonathan's father could not handle looking after Jonathan as a single man so he became very depressed and emotional committing suicide. Jonathan was then sent to an orphanage home where he stayed there for a while. Jonathan had been a very troubled boy since his dad passed away, at the orphanage home he had committed a crime which got him in so much trouble that he was sent to a tough borstal (youth detention centre). Being released from the borstal Jonathan was on his own and had to start a fresh new life, he was offered a job as a cleaner in a posh professional business firm which reminded him of the women his mother who left him had become and ever since she left him he had despised her. Jonathan’s manager where he was working as a cleaner was very bossy and bullied him constantly he thought that he was not kind to  him or fair at all, she treated him different  to the other workers. He became very triggered by his managers behaviour towards him as he felt humiliated and intimidated so it caused him to kill her, after this very day Jonathan became obsessed with torturing and killing females who were associated with professional business .

What type of characterisation will you have?

We have one stalker, and 4  female victims from professional businesses/ High respected jobs including the Manager at Jonathan's work.
(Secretary, school finance department and one who works in an airport). These females are bubbly happy independent females who work hard for there money and are single.
The killer is aggressive impatient and is triggered instantly by anything he feels is not right. He is sexually frustrated and hasn't been in contact with a female in a while.

Describe the Misc-en scene to be used or any visual motifs.

We have a stalker with a hoodie or mask, and then different locations will be London City Airport/train station, school, alleyway, common room and a basement. There will be a collage of various different pictures of females, with string to locate different locations or different victims. There will be headphones and party wear. There will be low lighting, chiaroscuro; also there will be street lighting at night, and natural ambient lighting during daytime.

What are your ideas about cinematography/photography?

There will be a tracking shot of a plane taking off, and then there will be an establishing shot of the airport. Then there will be a two shot of the  female who works at the airport /train station  walking into an airport and a male walking out in slow motion. At the station, there will be a close-up of the stalker with his hood up (representing his  identity), and there will be quick cuts at different parts of the collage after which we will see a long shot of victim number 2 (The school finance worker) then a close-up of the females hand tapping the St Angela’s barrier to start her day off at work, then a close-up of the door opening behind her (A point of view shot, the stalker following her). Then in an alleyway we see the female secretary walking home from a party. We will see a midshot of a stalker and then a shot of his shadow against the wall and then an extreme close-up of his eyes opening. Then in the basement there is a close-up of blood dripping from the victims face (secretary character) and the stalker crossing out pictures of the victim with blood. Then there will a two shot of the other two victims (Airport worker/School finance worker) trying to escape, and you’ll see them crying (close-up).

Conventions of trailers/posters/film mags you plan to reinforce or reinvent?

The film company’s names (adverts) such as Paramount Pictures will be fading in and out like many trailers in the film industry. We have loud eerie music when different victims are being stalked/killed. Then we will have a fast paced trailer, conforming to conventions. Then there will be quick cuts of different parts of the film without revealing the ending. The darkness and ambiguity of the stalker conforms to conventions as many film trailers and posters do not show the full identity of the stalker. The alleyway scene conforms to conventions because we see a lot of stalking happening in lonely dark places such as this. Also, having the victim’s female and the stalker male is typically seen in stalker slasher films

What resources will you need?

Actors
    One male actor
·        3-4 female victims
·        An array of images that the stalker is targeting
·        A collage board with images and string for visual effect
·        A hoodie for the stalker

Props
·        Fake blood
·        Makeup
·        Rope/duck tape
·        Dresses ( party clothes)
·        Mobile phone
·        Casual office  clothes
·        Knife

Settings
·        Airport (exterior)
·        DLR station  - London City Airport (exterior)
·        Alleyway (exterior)
·        Staircase (aerial shot)
·        School corridor – common room (interior)
·        Classroom (interior)
·        Basement – Cellar (interior)

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and recognisable film influences also what is your unique selling point.

Stalking on the phone (an idea from the movie scream) shows mysterious of not knowing who is there. A slasher film often includes blood and victims being trapped/followed via a tracking system, which is where the idea of a collage represents this convention, helping you to recognise the genre. The idea of ambiguity and identity is important therefore the stalkers face will be in chiaroscuro so you can only see him slightly and can be recognisable through his hoodie, which portrays his identity. The trailer will be aimed at young adults, which is our unique selling point and subverts common stalker films conventions because they are normally targeted at an older audience in which the stalker is often more mature than a teenager.

Empire Magazine Analysis

World War Z Poster Analysis

World War Z Trailer Analysis

World War Z Trailer

Analysis of World War Z

The trailer for World War Z is effective because the fact that it is a high concept film allows the audience to find it easy to see the genre being portrayed and easy for the viewers to distinguish between the different parts in the story. The trailer follows Todorov's narrative theory because it follows the basic principles of the stages required for linearity such as an equilibrium then disruption and then resolution/restoration of the equilibrium. This concept gives a strong sense of chronology and also is effective when aspects of editing are seen.

The trailer follows the classic continuity style of editing whereby we first see an establishing shot, which then goes into a two shot/ group shot. Various short cuts are used to engage the audience and often build intensity whilst we watch it. The power of suggestion entices the audience; giving them small hints and glimpses of different scenes to keep them interested and keen to go and see the actual film when it is released.

The clip also uses computer generated imagery (CGI) to add to the effects and build on the genre well. We see CGI being used effectively because it gradually builds to a climax and allows the viewers to question further parts to the film. Furthermore, the fact that captions are used such as 'This Summer' and 'Brad Pitt' give us a sense of excitement and eagerness to see when the actual film will be coming out. The suspense is built and there is clear bold captions highlighting the importance of watching the trailer. the fact that Brad Pitt's name is mentioned allows the viewers to become more involved in the clip because it shows how an 'A List' star is part of the film, this aims to engage the audience and make them feel captivated. This feeling is increased thorugh the use of short dialogue which is used to give small hints into key parts of the film and make the trailer memorable whilst creating a sense of foreboding and also using the power of suggestion to their advantage.

The trailer suggests that the genre is action, apocalyptic and dystopian. The fact that it is quite ambiguous with being centred around a specific genre allows a sense of mystery to unfold when they actually watch the film. I understand that these genre's are being portrayed due to the use of imagery of iconic landmarks and countries being destroyed and the whole idea of the world ending being represented clearly.

The use of iconography also highlights the key aspects of the various genre's represented. The fact that there are guns, helicopters, army machinery, bombs etc. creates an understanding that allows the viewers to link the imagery and to previous knowledge of the genre's.

The genre also represents the zeitgeist making it effective because it represents the changes in the spirit of the time. The idea that humanity is turning against each other and the fact the population is dramatically dropping, and a global pandemic is occurring with what looks like zombies- although we cant quite tell as this part of the trailer is left ambiguous making it effective as it captivates the audience making them want to find out more.

The trailer has no specific target audience and is open to a range of different people. It is ideally aimed at those who are interested in action/dystopian/apocalyptic films however, those who like Brad Pitt may also be interested and the most likely target audience ranges from about 13-50 year olds depending on their interests. However research does suggest that males tend to like action/war films more than females therefore there is more public appeal for males than for females.

The use of sound is also effective in the trailer because the oscillating and rhythmical music score creates suspense and is synchronised with the imagery and dialogue which creates a sense of tension and foreboding to occur this is enhanced through the sound of silence when the police officer is killed by the truck, the sense of foreboding increases and creates a powerful atmosphere and makes the viewers more eager to watch the film. Also, the trailer has various sound effects that amplify and are quite daunting, these allow a realistic effect to be portrayed towards the audience. The sounds of bombs and guns create synergy with the visuals to create an exciting and engaging trailer which is memorable to the audience and interests them.

To conclude, the trailer is effective because it engages the viewers and keeps them captivated through the use of various techniques such as sound and visual imagery, the fact it contains short cuts keeps the viewers enticed and engrossed in the film trailer making them want to watch the actual film.
Hello I'm Gayatri,
