Film Magazine Flat Plan

This is a flat plan for my film magazine. I have decided to use this layout as there are a majority of other magazines I have researched with similar layouts. The image will be  placed in the centre of the magazine following the rule of thirds and the headline will go across the image in large lettering. there will be various sell lines either side of the image. The sub images will go along the bottom of the magazine is a banner form. I will also put the masthead on the top and follow other conventions of a magazine such as the price and barcode.

Film Magazine Front Cover Draft 2

Screen grabs of the process

This is the second draft of my magazine front cover. I decided to use a simple red, orange/yellow and white colour scheme to represent the horror genre and give it clarity. The masthead is in a slashed red font to emphasise the impact of the horror genre. Also, I have included the issue number, date, price and barcode to follow the conventions of music magazines and show that it is a magazine that will be sold. The button is 3d looking to make it stand out on the page. I also added various sell lines to engage the audience and make them want to read more about the articles in the magazine. The headline is bold and shows the names of the film with a caption on what the feature article contains.
Along the bottom of the magazine is a range of sub images to show other features in the magazine to entice the audience and leave them eager to find out more.

Film Magazine Front Cover Draft

This is the first draft of my front cover which I have created using Photoshop. The masthead will be in a dripping style font to replicate the look of blood. The main image is of the model looking at the camera with a baseball bat to show the weapon that the killer uses. However I think that a knife may be a better weapon to use because it suggests a stronger emphasis on the slasher genre instead of the bat. The chiaroscuro effect of the lighting gives the killer a mysterious effect. He will also be placed on top of the mast head to show his dominance in the film. Along the bottom of the magazine there will be a series of images from different films to show other things that will be in the magazine. The headline will be large and show the name of the film to engage the audience. Other sell lines will be placed around the sides of the magazine to let readers know of other articles that will be featured in the magazine. There will be other conventions such as a barcode and price to show that this magazine is aimed at a mass market and will be sold in shops. The button engages the audience because it is bright and the '50' is bold to alert the readers that there is lots of interesting information to read in  the magazine that will engage them and eager to watch films and read reviews. The colour scheme will be simplistic to show clarity within the magazine and genre. I will use red, orange/yellow and white as these colours represent the genre well.

Film Magazine Front Cover Sketch 2

This is the second sketch of my magazine front cover. I decided to name my magazine 'SLASH' because I wanted to create a horror specific magazine. The tagline line/slogan will be engaging to the audience and make them want to read more. the killer will be looking at the camera conforming to conventions and will wear a hoodie. the name of the film will be used as the headline and will include a caption. the magazine will also feature an exclusive interview with Wes Craven. This will engage the audience and make them want to read the exclusive content of the magazine. The sub images will be of films that are new and really show the best of horror, they will be in the form of a banner. More film names will also be listed along the side of the magazine as sell lines with a button on the other side showing the 'Top 50 Must See Horror Movies'.

Film Magazine Front Cover Sketch 1

This is the first draft of my film magazine front cover. I wanted to make the main image on the front cover a midshot of the killer in my trailer. it will be centre framed and show the dark and mysterious character of him. he will wear a hood and half a mask to hide his identity. The headline will be large and go across the killers body. There will also be lots of sub images on the bottom of the magazine in the form of a banner. Also, there will be a button to include an interesting sell line which grabs the audiences attention. The sell lines will be displayed on the side of the magazine with various different articles to entice the audience. The magazine will also follow conventions such as having a barcode, issue number, price etc. to show that you can purchase it.

Front Cover of Horror Magazine Planning Ideas

Horror Magazine Planning Ideas
Masthead Title
The masthead will be bold and clearly displayed along the top of the magazine. It will relate to the horror genre as I would like the magazine to genre specific so the target market can find information about their favourite films related to the horror/slasher genre. The masthead colours will reflect the genre as it will be red indicating blood will the possibility of it being in a dripping or slashed effect like the magazine 'Scream' or 'Fangoria'. Possible masthead ideas could be 'Slash', 'Enigma'

Main Image and Sub Images
The main image will be a midshot of the killer in the centre of the magazine looking at the camera therefore looking at the audience to get them intrigued and make them want to find out more about the character in the film. the killer will be wearing a mask however just covering half of his face so you can see the other half. This conforms to stereotypes of the killer wearing a mask therefore the genre of the magazine is clear meaning people can find out more about the killer and can relate to the magazine. He will also be wearing a hoodie to hide his identity further creating a sense of foreboding.
The sub images will consist of images of directors, films that are being released and also the character being featured in my film. they will be placed along the bottom of the magazine in a banner type layout to grab the audiences attention.

 Headline and Sell lines
The headline will be associated with the film either displaying the name of the film or a tagline that is associated with the film to grab the audiences attention. It will be bold and easy to read so it is memorable and appropriate. It will feature a caption to give the audience further information and will not interfere with the facial aspects of the same image.
The sell lines will on the sides of the magazine so they are easy to read. Also they will give information on reviews of the latest films and latest directors. These will be engaging and attractive to make the audience want to read the magazine more.

Layout Design- Colours, Fonts, Banners etc.

The layout will be simple yet effective as the image will create a sense of foreboding and allow the audience/readers to get a sense of character. This will be the main focal point for the readers. The use of colours will be simplistic: white, red and possibly gold or yellow to conform to genre conventions and replicate the style of the Empire/ Scream magazine.
I will also include banners at the bottom of the magazine and at the top of the magazine to display images and sell lines. There will also be use of a button to show other sell lines in a different layout. The headline font will be will be simple yet have a slashed effect or blood effect and be bold whereas the sell lines and other information will be in simplistic font that is easy to read.
